  • COVID-19 Specific Rules
    • Those who are sick or who live with a vulnerable family member should stay home.
    • Beaches will have a limited capacity in accordance with Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines to accommodate social distancing. Capacity limits vary by beach; staff will monitor and limit admission to comply with these limits.
    • Patrons must maintain a six-foot distance from those outside of their household while at the beach.
    • Face coverings must be worn when entering the beach, interacting with staff, and while on the beach when maintaining a six-foot distance from others is not possible. Children age two or under and those who cannot wear a face covering due to medical issues are exemplt.
  • Swimming is permitted only in those areas of the beach that are guarded and posted for swimming.
  • Swimmers may not swim beyond the marked buoys, which separate swimmers from boat traffic.
  • Swimming may be restricted or prohibited due to safety conditions. Examples include lightning, seiche warnings, rough water, etc.
  • Season Token or Daily Ticket is required for admission for all patrons, age one and over.
  • Pets, with the exception of service animals, are not permitted on the beach at any time.
  • The launching and retrieving of boats are prohibited.
  • Smoking is not allowed on City of Evanston beaches.
  • Fires are not allowed on the beach, including barbeques.
  • No alcoholic beverages allowed on beaches or in the parks.
  • Glass containers are not allowed on the beach.
  • Patrons are not allowed on the breakwall.
  • Children must be properly supervised by an adult.
  • Children under 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult (15 years or older).
  • Persons 11—14 years old may supervise children ten and under when they have written parental permission.
  • Use of inflatable objects or floatation devices, except Coast Guard-approved lifejackets is not allowed.
  • Loud music that may disturb beach patrons is prohibited.
  • Ball playing, Frisbee, kite flying, etc. is permitted only in areas designated by beach staff.
  • Beach patrons are not allowed on lifeguard chairs, boats, or buoys. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in loss of beach use privileges without refund, and/or legal prosecution.
  • Scuba Diving and the use of masks and snorkels is only permitted on Greenwood Beach by certified divers with required equipment. Required equipment includes at least one other certified diver with them, a buoyancy vest, scuba certification card, diver down flag, and submersible pressure gauge to enter.
  • Food and drink will be permitted on the beach only in those areas so designated.
  • Digging of large holes is prohibited. All holes must be filled in when leaving.
  • Specifically identified areas may be reserved for Recreation Division Programs.
  • All commercial photography is prohibited without permission from the Parks & Recreation Department.

Beach hours: Weekdays, 10:30 a.m. through 7:30 p.m.; Weekends, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Purchase Beach Tokens

Season tokens can be purchased online and picked up at the Dempster Street Beach Office, 1251 Lake Shore Blvd. (10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.); Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday); Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St. (8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday); and Robert Crown Community Center and Library Branch, 1801 Main St. (9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday) during their office hours. Tokens can also be purchased in person at these facilities.
